1 Mar 04 - More Water, Sewer Improvements for Beni Suef

Beni Suef, Egypt, March 1, 2004 – More than 150,000 residents of Beni Suef will soon have increased access to clean water and sanitation thanks to joint American and Egyptian projects planned and under way in the Governorate. Engineer Said Mohammed Ali Al-Naggar, Governor of Beni Suef, joined Dr. Kenneth C. Ellis, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) director in Egypt, in announcing new water and wastewater projects, which will benefit urban and rural residents of Beni Suef governorate. The construction of a sewer system and two “slow sand filter” water treatment plants is funded with $5.3 million from the United States and 9.2 million Egyptian pounds (>E) from the Egyptian government, raising total United States funding for water and wastewater infrastructure work in the Beni Suef governorate to $50 million.

The new projects include:

  • Sewer system construction in El Azhary in Beni Suef City (Zone 7). Construction of a pump station and force main will benefit 52,000 residents and installation of a collection system will benefit 26,000 residents.

  • A slow sand filter water treatment plant in Mimoon that will provide 5 million liters of clean water per day benefiting 50,000 residents.

  • A slow sand filter water treatment plant in Sumasta with 5 million liters daily capacity benefiting 50,000 residents.

The officials were joined by the Secretary General for Beni Suef Governorate, Dr. Adel Metwalli; the Chairman of Beni Suef General Authority for Water and Sanitation (BEGAWS), Mr. Taha Shehata; the President of Beni Suef City, Mr. Mohammad Abdel Mawla; the Mayor of Wasta, Mr. Samir Mohamed Abdel Gawad; the Mayor of Sumasta, Mr. Hamdy Mahmood Baraka; as well as other local officials and members of Parliament.

The officials also viewed the progress of two major facilities under construction in Beni Suef City with joint U.S.-Egyptian funding:
  • A water treatment plant can process 26 million liters per day for the benefit of more than 200,000 residents, funded by $12 million from the U.S. and >E 3 million from the Government of Egypt.

  • A wastewater treatment plant can process 50 million liters per day for the benefit of more than 200,000 residents, funded by $22.8 million from the U.S. and >E 4 million from Egypt.

USAID is also funding $8.3 million to strengthen the management of BEGAWS and providing $1.6 million to UNICEF for latrines, household water connections and environmental education in rural villages. “I am happy to be here today for the pleasure of meeting the people and leaders of Beni Suef and for the satisfaction of seeing our cooperation in progress,” USAID Director Ellis said. “Financial security and sustainability is crucial for the Beni Suef authority to maintain its facilities and provide high quality water and wastewater services to customers far into the future.”
