Improvements for Beni Suef
Beni Suef, Egypt, March 1,
2004 – More than 150,000 residents of Beni
Suef will soon have increased access to clean
water and sanitation thanks to joint American and
Egyptian projects planned and under way in the
Governorate. Engineer Said Mohammed Ali Al-Naggar,
Governor of Beni Suef, joined Dr. Kenneth C.
Ellis, United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) director in Egypt, in
announcing new water and wastewater projects,
which will benefit urban and rural residents of
Beni Suef governorate. The construction of a sewer
system and two “slow sand filter” water treatment
plants is funded with $5.3 million from the United
States and 9.2 million Egyptian pounds (>E)
from the Egyptian government, raising total United
States funding for water and wastewater
infrastructure work in the Beni Suef governorate
to $50 million.
The new projects
include:
Sewer system construction in El Azhary in Beni
Suef City (Zone 7). Construction of a pump station
and force main will benefit 52,000 residents and
installation of a collection system will benefit
26,000 residents.
A slow sand filter water treatment plant in
Mimoon that will provide 5 million liters of clean
water per day benefiting 50,000 residents.
A slow sand filter water treatment plant in
Sumasta with 5 million liters daily capacity
benefiting 50,000 residents.
The officials
were joined by the Secretary General for Beni Suef
Governorate, Dr. Adel Metwalli; the Chairman of
Beni Suef General Authority for Water and
Sanitation (BEGAWS), Mr. Taha Shehata; the
President of Beni Suef City, Mr. Mohammad Abdel
Mawla; the Mayor of Wasta, Mr. Samir Mohamed Abdel
Gawad; the Mayor of Sumasta, Mr. Hamdy Mahmood
Baraka; as well as other local officials and
members of Parliament.
The officials also
viewed the progress of two major facilities under
construction in Beni Suef City with joint
U.S.-Egyptian funding:
A water treatment plant can process 26 million
liters per day for the benefit of more than
200,000 residents, funded by $12 million from the
U.S. and >E 3 million from the Government
of Egypt.
A wastewater treatment plant can process 50
million liters per day for the benefit of more
than 200,000 residents, funded by $22.8 million
from the U.S. and >E 4 million from
Egypt.
USAID is also funding $8.3 million
to strengthen the management of BEGAWS and
providing $1.6 million to UNICEF for latrines,
household water connections and environmental
education in rural villages. “I am happy to be
here today for the pleasure of meeting the people
and leaders of Beni Suef and for the satisfaction
of seeing our cooperation in progress,” USAID
Director Ellis said. “Financial security and
sustainability is crucial for the Beni Suef
authority to maintain its facilities and provide
high quality water and wastewater services to
customers far into the future.”
